Mikel Arteta has praised the performance of Alexandre Lacazette on the club’s official website after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Leicester City last night.
Lacazette was selected to start up-front for Arsenal, but missed their best chance of the game.
The French striker headed over from close range, after being picked out by Hector Bellerin, and that profligacy proved costly.
Leicester ultimately punished Arsenal late on and claimed the three points.
Lacazette came in for a great deal of criticism on social media after the game, but Arteta has stuck by his first choice striker.
“Obviously, strikers need goals and he started tonight, he looked sharp and he was really aggressive in his play,” Arteta said.
“Yeah, he had an opportunity to score that goal and he didn’t. I just support them and give them more confidence and [help them] try to create more.”
Numerous Arsenal supporters are now calling for Lacazette to be dropped, and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to be shifted into a central striking role.
Aubameyang is yet to really hit top form this season from a wider berth, and there is a feeling that he could be more effective down the middle.
Arsenal’s defeat to Leicester means that they currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League table.
