It looks like the end of the road for Willian at Arsenal.
The Brazilian winger only joined Arsenal on a Bosman last summer after being released by Chelsea.
But it was a pretty awful first season at the Gunners and the 32-year-old struggled to justify his £220,000-a-week wage packet.
There has been speculation about him leaving North London this summer but a move to Inter Miami collapsed over salary demands.
But Arteta has revealed via Arsenal’s official website that he could still leave the club before next week’s transfer deadline.
The Spanish manager has confirmed talks between the club and the player’s agent, amid speculation of a move to Corinthians back in his homeland.
He said: “We are having some conversations with him and the agent and we are evaluating the position that we’re in at the moment.”
Good news
This is good news, if it does indeed materialise.
As mentioned, Willian is a big earner at Arsenal and getting him off the wage bill could potentially help Arteta and Edu’s efforts to bring in another player.
We’re talking about over £11 million that the Emirates Stadium could reduce from the annual wage bill and that could strengthen their chances of signing someone else over the next four days.
Besides, the former Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk winger has no long-term future at the club and that’s been evident for about nine months.
It makes sense for all parties if he were to leave.
