Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has divided opinion amongst Gunners fans during his time in north London.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger addressed the media ahead of his side’s Europe League clash with Östersunds FK tonight, and expressed his concern with Mesut Ozil, after the German was once again struck down with illness this week, as quoted by ESPN.
Ozil missing games through illness has become a common theme during his time in north London, and with the Carabao Cup final just three days away, Gunners fans will surely be concerned that their star man might not be physically up to the challenge that their side will face against Manchester City.
The 29-year-old has chalked up five goals and seven assists in 24 outings for Arsenal in all competitions this season, and he has finally started to put in the required work-rate that was often missing from his game during his early years at the Emirates.
Following last Thursday’s win in Sweden, Ozil was struck down by illness at the weekend, and Wenger highlighted the frequency with which the German has struggled with his health as a major concern, as quoted by ESPN:
“Ozil’s immune system is a bit in trouble at the moment and I don’t know why. I hope we can improve that medically. He should be OK for Sunday.”
The Germany international committed his future to Arsenal last month, signing a new three-and-a-half year deal worth a reported £350,000 per week, and if he is to prove value for money, he will need to improve upon the physical side of his game, especially as he edges towards 30.
Despite some fans bemoaning Ozil’s perceived lack of effort, though, the Gunners faithful will surely be praying that he is fully fit to take on Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday.
