The Arsenal boss is not planning a move for the German international.
This week has seen Arsenal linked with the signature of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. It was reported in the Daily Star earlier this week that Arsenal were ready to swoop for the German international midfielder as well as defender Mats Hummels.
However, Arsene Wenger has today rubbished links with Gundogan. In quotes from his press conference, shared by Arsenal.com, Wenger told the assembled media that Gundogan was not a part of Arsenal’s transfer plans for this month. Instead he informed them the club were looking for defenders:
“We are out in the market and we are working very hard every day. All our scouts and our people are working very hard to find a defender.
“He’s [Gundogan] not a defender. At the moment we are more looking for the defensive department.”
The Mirror had also discussed an Arsenal link with Gundogan earlier in the month. They went as far as too claim that The Gunners were ready to spend £16 million on bringing in the midfield dynamo, who had reportedly rejected a contract extension in Germany, according to the same report.
Gundogan, who spent almost the entire of last season injured, has struggled for his best form this term as Dortmund sit second from bottom in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal are also well stocked with players of Gundogan’s ilk – with Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla to name but a few. So the links always seemed odd and it is no surprise that Wenger has distanced himself from the talk.
