Premier League legend Arsene Wenger believes Liverpool made a mistake in the summer transfer window as Sadio Mane was sold to Bayern Munich, with the Reds’ struggling for attacking consistency this season.
Speaking to BeIN Sport via Foot Mercato, the former Arsenal manager questioned why Liverpool sold Mane in the summer, with the Reds struggling to fill the void left by the Senegalese international despite already having Luis Diaz on their books and signing Darwin Nunez for a potential club-record fee.
Although Mane’s form for Bayern has been far from spectacular, Liverpool are definitely missing the attacker’s presence in the squad. With Mohamed Salah’s performances being quite underwhelming this season as well as the aforementioned Diaz’s.
Indeed, any club would miss a player as good as Mane. And Liverpool’s decision to sell the former Southampton star has been one that has been raised by many fans and pundits as the season has progressed, with Wenger now joining the discussion on if the Reds were right to sanction the £35m transfer in the first place.
Wenger said on Liverpool selling Mane: “They lost Mane, who was a top player in big games. He had something, an aggressive attitude and determination. He would score no matter what, he would make things happen. It’s hard to measure what it takes away from them. They are missing something they had before.”
Mane being sold looks worse on Liverpool’s part with each game
Liverpool fans always knew they would struggle without Mane’s services at the beginning of this season. Yet very few predicted that Jurgen Klopp’s side would struggle this much following the attacker’s departure, and the transfer seems to weigh heavier and heavier on the Reds with each passing game.
After all, Liverpool’s form in the Premier League has been subpar, to say the least. And whilst it will take time for this new attack to gel, Mane’ absence is being felt across the entire squad, and the Reds might have been better off keeping for the forward for the final year of his contract than selling him to Bayern.
