Though seeking to be modest, the Arsenal legend’s comments about Spurs will be music to their fans’ ears.
Legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have a high-quality young generation of players, comparing them to Manchester United’s famous Class of 92, and suggested that there is plenty more to come from the Spurs crop.
The Frenchman, who managed the Gunners between 1996 and 2018, won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and seven Charity/Community Shields during his time at Highbury and the Emirates Stadium, making him the most successful manager in the club’s history.
Despite his strong allegiance to Arsenal, however, he praised the talent at Tottenham’s disposal, singling out several players who joined the club while young – Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier – and have become mainstays of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Speaking after being handed a Lifetime Achievement prize at the Laureus World Sport Awards in Monaco, Wenger is quoted by The Mirror as saying: “Tottenham have a good, young generation. They have a core of young players such as Winks, Kane, Dele Alli and Dier like we had at Arsenal.
“Man United had it too, with their Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and Butt generation, but now they (Tottenham) have established a good, basic platform to develop from. Tottenham’s players are maturing too so it will be interesting to see how they develop.”
Even though Wenger could not be seen to show too much praise to his former club’s bitter rivals, the fact that Spurs have such a good crop of players at the minute that even a legendary Arsenal manager cannot deny their quality – even comparing them to one of the most famous English club generations of recent years – is something which Lilywhites fans should truly revel and take pride in.
