Napoli want to sign Wojciech Szczesny from Arsenal to replace Pepe Reina, who has been heavily linked with Newcastle United of late.

As it stands, it’s still uncertain who will be donning the goalkeeping gloves for Newcastle United ahead of their return to the Premier League next season.

The Northern Echo claims that Karl Darlow could be allowed to leave despite playing a major role in their promotion back to the top flight while it appears that Chelsea are on the verge of beating the Magpies to veteran shot-stopper Willy Caballero.

All the while, Newcastle’s reportedly interest in Pepe Reina rumbles on in the background. The Northern Echo claimed at the end of last month that Serie A side Napoli had made a new goalkeeper their top priority after the Spanish international endured a mixed season between the sticks at the Stadio San Paolo.

The report adds that Reina, who has won trophies in England, Germany and Italy as well as two European championship crowns and the 2010 World Cup with Spain, could be available for as little as £4 million.

And it appears that his departure is one step closer. Il Mattino claims that Napoli have identified Wojciech Szczesny as Reina’s replacement after two exceptional seasons on loan at rivals Roma.

The report claims that Roma want to sign the Polish international permanently while Juventus have also been linked recently. However, it does appear that a return to parent club Arsenal is unlikely as long as Petr Cech remains Arsene Wenger’s first-choice.

Therefore, if Napoli are able to lure Szczesny to the southern coast this summer, that will surely spell the end of Reina’s Napoli career.

And a reunion with Rafael Benitez, who brought him to Liverpool all the way back in 2005, could be on the cards.
