Jack Wilshere is too good for Aston Villa and the Championship so should Newcastle rekindle interest in Arsenal ace?

Aston Villa are the latest side to show interest in Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere, according to the Daily Mail, with uncertainty about the midfielder’s future at the Emirates Stadium.

Wilshere has entered the final year of his current contract with the Gunners and after convincing John Terry to drop down to the Championship, Villa manager Steve Bruce was hoping he could do the same with the 25-year-old.

Yet the England international is 11 years younger than Terry and rather than entering the twilight years of his career, should really be about to hit his peak.

Unfortunately Wilshere’s stock has fallen drastically over the past 12 months, not helped by a fairly uninspiring loan spell at Bournemouth in 2016/17.

That said, despite his drop in form and a proneness to injury – he is currently sidelined with a hairline fracture on his leg – the Englishman still has plenty to offer in the Premier League, just perhaps not at a top six club anymore.

Which is exactly why Newcastle United should try and assert their authority in the race to sign the midfield ace, with the Express reporting their interest.

With the Sun claiming Jack Colback expected to leave St James’ Park before the transfer window closes at the end of August, Wilshere could be the perfect upgrade on the 27-year-old – even if Arsene Wenger has suggested he wants to keep him.

“It’s good that he is back and available,” Wenger was quoted by the Independent. “I think he needs games now. He might play again on Monday night. He is not far away now [from being completely fit]. I plan for him to be here for the season, after we will see.”

However, with Wilshere down the pecking order under Wenger and the North Londoners facing the prospect of losing him on a free in 12 months time, the Magpies could still be able to tempt Wilshere to the North East.
