The Gunners made three major signings in the summer transfer window.

It is fair to say that the transfer window was something of a mixed bag for Arsenal.

The early signing of Granit Xhaka suggested promise, but then they were made to wait until the final week of the window for any more major signings.

Then arrived Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez, who both joined to improve Arsene Wenger’s options in defence and attack respectively.

Despite that double deal, Arsenal fans have been left somewhat disappointed having hoped to see more arrivals.

However, a look at their second-string XI shows that Wenger may have actually been justified in not bringing a raft of new players given the quality he already has at his disposal.

As the graphic shows, when everyone is fit, their second choice XI is actually one that would be competitive in the Premier League.

Indeed, most of the players in that group are likely to play a big role in the first team this season.

Arguably the weakest position is the number 10 slot, but Alex Iwobi proved last season he is more than capable of playing in the Premier League.

That is the sort of strength in depth most teams could only dream of and perhaps goes a long way to answering why Wenger was so keen to avoid signing any old player this summer.
