Arsenal defeated Liverpool 4-1 on Saturday and German international Mesut Ozil played a key role.

Arsenal returned to domestic matters after the international break to put on a glittering performance against a Liverpool side whose hopes of a top-four finish may now be over.

The Gunners were kept at bay for much of the first half, despite being quick out of the tracks, but Hector Bellerin finally put them ahead in the 37th minute.

From there, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez put the game to bed before half-time, with Jordan Henderson’s second-half penalty a mere consolation and Olivier Giroud adding some gloss to the score-line in the final minute.

There were some brilliant players on show for Arsenal, but the one who really stood out was Ozil, who is now well and truly back to his best following a long spell out of the team through injured.

The German international has impressed in recent weeks but he looked even sharper against Liverpool, scoring one goal and playing three key passes to set up chances for his teammates

He also had a passing accuracy of 89 per cent while he went on three dribbles and recovered the ball on four occasions.

With a 100 per cent shooting accuracy (from one attempt), 82 touches of the ball and the air of a player who has rediscovered his mojo, there is no telling what Arsenal’s club-record signing could do between now and the end of the campaign.
