Arsenal slipped to defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing 1-0 away at Aston Villa in a disappointing performance.

The Gunners have been in good form of late, but lost in the Midlands in midweek with a defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and lost there again on Saturday.

Ollie Watkins gave Villa the win with an early goal, firing home from Bertrand Traore’s pass to give the hosts all three points at Villa Park.

Mikel Arteta was forced to give new signing Mat Ryan his first Premier League start for Arsenal, having seen Bernd Leno pick up a red card against Wolves.

The German’s suspension meant that Ryan had to come into the side, and whilst he had little chance with Watkins’ winner due to a deflection, he largely impressed.

Ryan racked up seven saves during the game to keep Arsenal in with a shout, but the Australian ultimately ended up on the losing side.

Ryan may well be looking to land a permanent move to North London having joined on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, and he took to Twitter to react to his league debut.

The 28-year-old admitted his Arsenal debut was a ‘proud moment’, and is ‘gutted’ that it wasn’t the perfect start for him as he tasted defeat.
