It was not the return to action that Arsenal and David Luiz would have dreamt of during the standstill.

The Brazilian started on the bench but an injury to Pablo Mari forced Mikel Arteta to bring his most experienced defender on.

Luiz looked assured and got on the ball regularly in his first few minutes on the pitch. However a terrible mistake from him gifted the defending champions the lead just before half time.

The former Chelsea man’s confidence possibly took a hit at that moment and he never recovered. Luiz brought Riyad Mahrez down in the box after half time and was given his marching orders.

Kevin de Bruyne converted the penalty and that was game over for Arsenal. Luiz’s performance prompted multiple fans and pundits to speak about his contract situation.

The Brazilian will be a free agent in two weeks time and many people urged Arsenal and Arteta to let him go. Luiz decided to shed some light on the situation after the game as well as speak about what wasn’t one of his finest nights.

He told Sky Sports: “It was not the team’s fault, it was my fault. The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was just my fault.”

“I should have taken a different decision in the last two months. It was all about my contract. I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s just my fault and that’s it. “

“I love to be here that is why I continue to train hard and that is why I came today. Nobody asked me to speak, it is up to me to show my face. I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions,” he said.

Does Luiz have a future at Arsenal?

It is admirable of Luiz to come out and face the media after a performance as bad as that. However, his unpredictability at the back makes him a real liability for Arsenal at times.

It is almost certain that Luiz will stay at Arsenal until the end of this season. However, the Gunners have a huge decision to make regarding his future after that, but it still looks like Arteta wants him at the Emirates.

The Arsenal boss claimed that his opinion about Luiz won’t changed after his performance at the Etihad. (Sky Sports)

That can be viewed as a hint about a new contract for the experienced Brazilian but a lot can change in the coming days and Luiz might well be allowed to leave the club just a year after joining them.
