Southampton are reportedly interested in signing the Arsenal forward.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes has a lot of work to do at St Mary’s between now and the end of the transfer window on Thursday, if he is to build a squad of players who are capable of achieving a top 10 finish.
One particular where the Welshman will be desperate to strengthen is his centre-forward department, with more pace pace required through the middle.
According to the London Evening Standard, one player in particular who the Saints are targeting is Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, and if Hughes manages to bring him to the south coast, it could turn out to be a superb addition for them.
The 27-year-old joined the Gunners from Manchester United in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £16 million, but injuries have hampered his progress at the Emirates.
If given a run of regular first-team action, however, he would surely prove to be a real asset for Southampton.
The 40-capped England international would provide the Saints with something completely different in the final third, what with his electric pace and willingness to run in behind the opposition’s defence.
According to a report from Goal, Welbeck is valued at around £15 million, and in today’s day and age, that would represent excellent value for Southampton.
