Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson would be a smart signing for Newcastle

The Arsenal defender would be a useful addition to the Newcastle United squad this summer.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez will surely be looking to bolster his options in the right-back position this summer, after he chose not to extend Vurnon Anita’s contact with the club.

With this in mind, the Spaniard should consider a move for Gunners full-back Carl Jenkinson, who has been left out of Arsenal’s squad for their pre-season tour of Australia.

The 25-year-old moved to the Emirates from Charlton Athletic way back in 2011, for a fee believed to be in the region of just £1 million, but has never really lived up to high expectations.

Jenkinson has spent two separate loan spells away from Arsenal, both with West Ham, and proved that he has the talent to make it at the highest level during those spells.

The Englishman is full of energy, and his high stamina levels enable him to get up and down the flank for the entirety of the 90 minutes – something that Benitez expects of his full-backs.

The Gunners star is a sound defender, but it could be argued that he offers more from an attacking aspect, and with Newcastle’s options in the wide right attacking area limited at present, Jenkinson could be a useful asset.

The Arsenal right-back has reached an age now where he absolutely has to be playing regular first-team football, if he has any chance of fulfilling his potential, and if he is provided with that at St James’ Park he could very well flourish under Benitez.

Jenkinson only has 12 months remaining on his current deal at the Emirates, so Newcastle could pick him up for a bargain, if they decide to pursue the 25-year-old’s signature.
