Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has told the Daily Mail that he was disappointed that Unai Emery didn’t back him to start from the beginning of the campaign.

Chambers spent two years away from Arsenal on loan, but was expecting to be used in their defence this term.

However, David Luiz’s arrival in the summer seemed to knock him further down the pecking order.

Chambers did prove his worth to Arsenal at the weekend though, as he came off the bench to score in his side’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa.

And the £16 million centre-back (Daily Mail) admits that he has held talks with Emery over his place in Arsenal’s squad.

“Obviously it was disappointing, but I respect the manager and I respect his decisions,” Chambers said.

“He spoke to me and I spoke to him. What was said is between me and him.

“I have to work hard in training every day to get an opportunity again and to prove myself and help the team where I can.”

Chambers’ goal on Sunday may have pushed him into Emery’s thinking for a starting place.

Arsenal have looked far from rock solid at the back over the early weeks of the season, with Luiz’s showings already coming in for some criticism.

Arsenal are next in action later this evening, when they take on Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, and Chambers may be given the nod.
