Bernd Leno saved Arsenal from a much worse humiliation this afternoon.
Manchester City hammered the 10-man Gunners 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium to ensure Arsenal are rock bottom of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta’s side have lost all three league outings so far and things are looking grim for the Spanish coach.
Thing is, it could – and should – have been a lot worse for the visitors.
If not for Leno, a £22 million signing under Unai Emery, Arsenal would’ve been returning to North London with defeat by a greater margin after the German goalkeeper pulled off a number of brilliant saves, including a couple to deny Raheem Sterling.
Even some Manchester City fans were left impressed by the former Bayer Leverkusen stopper.
Here’s how they reacted on Twitter to his performance:
Ramsdale pressure
You have to hand it to Leno, for he is really responding well to Aaron Ramsdale’s addition.
Arsenal spent £30 million on the English goalkeeper last week but fair play to Leno because Ramsdale’s arrival has really provided a kick up the you-know-what.
Even in last week’s defeat by Chelsea, the Germany international did well to ensure that was only 2-0 on the day.
It’s amazing what a sudden increase in pressure can do to a player.
Leno was erratic and unpredictable last season, but this time around he knows that Ramsdale will be given the gloves if he gives Mikel Arteta the slightest reason to.
And so far, he hasn’t.
