Douglas Luiz has labelled Aston Villa’s new Head Coach Unai Emery as a ‘big coach’ and how he has previously managed ‘big clubs’ like Arsenal.

The Brazil midfielder added that Aston Villa themselves are a ‘big club’ and he thinks Emery can help the team because they have ‘such a good squad’.

On Monday night, Villa confirmed that Emery was Steven Gerrard’s replacement after they nabbed him from 2021 Europa League winners, Villarreal – Jamie Carragher praised the appointment.

The 50-year-old will officially start his role from November 1 and his first game in charge is expected to be Villa’s Premier League home clash against Manchester United, followed by a League Cup game against the very same opponent at Old Trafford.

After stints at PSG, but most importantly at Arsenal during his only time in the Premier League, Emery might have a point or two to prove upon his return to English football.

That might favour Villa in their ambitions of reaching Europe, as Luiz shared his thoughts on his new coach, as he told Sky Sports News broadcast (27/10/22).

“I think he’s such a good coach,” said Luiz. “I didn’t look too much in his life before, but I know.

“He’s (managed) PSG and Arsenal. It’s a big club. I think it’s so good for us. Aston Villa is a big club. And he’s a big coach. I think it’s so important for us. We have such a good squad. I think he will help so much.”

EMERY IS OUT TO PROVE A POINT

That stint at Arsenal would have toughened Emery up, and on the face of it, he did a much better job given the players he had to work with, how most of them were booted out by Mikel Arteta years later, how there was a clear culture issue and the simple fact that he was replacing Arsene Wenger.

Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see what he has learned, what he will change and what he can bring to this underperforming Villa side.

On Sunday, with Gerrard out of the door, Villa showcased their attacking prowess by smashing Brentford 4-0, including scoring three goals inside 15 minutes.

Aaron Danks opted to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is what Emery also favours, so that could prove to be a match made in heaven for the multiple Europa League winner and Villa themselves.
