Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst would be a great fit for Mikel Arteta’s goal-shy Arsenal side, former Gunners coach Andries Joncker told SportBuzzer.

The 6ft 6ins Dutchman might have only joined the Wolves in 2018 from AZ Alkmaar but, after just two-and-a-half years at the VFL Arena, he is already threatening to make history with the 2009 Bundesliga champions.

Weghorst’s goal in the 2-2 draw with Cologne over the weekend was his 40th in 76 matches for Wolfsburg; a record that places him fourth on the club’s all time list of Bundesliga goal-scorers.

It seems unlikely that the late-blooming 28-year-old will force his way into the top three, however.

Weghorst has been open about his desire to play for a bona fide European giant before it’s too late and, speaking to SportBuzzer last week, Wolfsburg director Jochen Schneider refused to rule out a parting of the ways in 2021.

Joncker, who has had spells at Wolfsburg and Arsenal during his coaching career, believes Weghorst could thrive in the Premier League.

“(Weghorst) always gives full throttle, (he) does everything to score goals. I had already noticed him at Heracles Almelo. And then there was the transfer to AZ Alkmaar (in 2016),” Joncker explained.

“This is a change from a mediocre to an almost top club (in Holland). Not everyone can take this step. But he made it.

“Journalists called me and asked if he would be able to play for Arsenal. Yes, of course. If you can be successful in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and, if you keep knocking on the door of the Dutch national team, then you have to be able to be successful in England too.

“I’m not thinking of clubs like Manchester City or Chelsea, but all other clubs fit. So Arsenal would fit very well.”

Arsenal have been lacking a classic, old-school target man since Olivier Giroud left for Chelsea nearly three years ago. But Weghorst, with his giant frame and formidable leap, would certainly give Mikel Arteta’s goal-shy side a completely different option in the final third.

Weghorst was linked with the Gunners over the summer, via BILD, who suggest that Wolfsburg will demand £32 million for their talismanic striker.
