Arsenal want to keep William Saliba and have now offered the defender a new contract to stay with the North London club.

The Gunners had a promising centre back partnership last season as Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes played together regularly.

Mikel Arteta has now changed up his back line though with Saliba coming into the side.

After three loan spells at Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille, Saliba was finally considered to be ready for first-team action.

Arsenal want to keep William Saliba

Saliba has made an immediate impact in this Arsenal team and has effectively bumped Ben White out to playing at right back.

The Frenchman is not only a sensation now but he looks set for an enormous future at just 21.

Arsenal fans are hoping to see Saliba shine for years to come and the Gunners are trying to make that a reality.

The Athletic report that Arsenal have held formal talks with Saliba over a new contract.

An offer has been made and Arsenal are now hoping that Saliba will put pen to paper on an extended deal.

Saliba’s current contract expires at the end of the season but Arsenal can activate a one-year option.

Having a long-term contract in place would be ideal though, especially with a number of other clubs believed to be keen.

This comes at interesting timing too given Saliba’s rather frank verdict on his own form.

Saliba has told Viaplay after Sunday’s 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest that he thinks he hasn’t been good for the last three or four weeks.

The centre back believes he must become more consistent if he is to really reach the top of the game.

Arsenal fans love Saliba but he is being very honest about his form even with contract talks ongoing.

Hopefully Saliba can get back to top form soon – and with that new contract in place and signed.
