David Bentley urges Arsenal to sign former Tottenham star Gareth Bale.
David Bentley is one of the rare former footballers who has played for both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Now he is urging Gareth Bale to do the same, suggesting Arsenal make a bid for the former Spurs fan favourite.
Speaking exclusively to 888sport, Bentley said that from a footballing and financial perspective, Bale ticks the boxes for Spurs.
He argues they are one of the few clubs who could afford him, especially if they offload high earners Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Bentley said: “If there was an option of going for Gareth Bale – who is available and can have an effect long-term – then Arsenal will pay the wages. That would put the cat among the pigeons. That would be controversial to say the least.
“But if you’re looking around the world at the minute for an unknown or a foreign player without Premier League experience then it’s very difficult to get them up to speed straight away. There are a few rumours and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was available and £86m would be a snip.
“Bale can do everything and is one of the best players I’ve ever seen. He’s also commercially good. If they can get him for £86m they can more than manage the £300,000 a week or whatever he’s on. That would be the player I’d target.”
Two problems here for Arsenal would be Bale’s willingness to join the Gunners, as he has always spoken highly of Spurs since leaving the club.
The second is that Tottenham hold an option clause as terms of Bale’s sale, which gives them 72 hours to match any bid received by Bale from an English club.
As Bentley says, it would be a controversial move, but it is not one to put your money on any time soon.
