A select round-up of transfer news relating to Arsenal, including Wayne Rooney, Tin Jedvaj, Gonzalo Higuain and Gervinho.
Arsenal are reportedly close to completing the transfer of Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid, with the deal only being delayed by the Spanish club’s attempts to appoint a new manager. Higuain has agreed a £130,000 per week contract, and will cost around £22million, becoming the club’s record signing and highest earner.
Higuain might not be the only big name striker arriving this summer though, with speculation Arsenal are also planning a move to Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United striker would likely cost Arsenal even more than Higuain, and his £250,000 per week wages could be a stumbling block even with Arsenal’s new outlook on spending.
Alisher Usmanov, Arsenal’s second-largest shareholder, has recently expressed his belief that Rooney would be an excellent signing for the club. However if Higuain arrives, Arsenal might be reluctant to spend another large chunk of money on a striker, having also brought in Yaya Sanogo this summer.
Arsenal are considering a £6million move for Dinamo Zagreb youngster Tin Jedvaj. Roma reportedly failed with a £5million bid for the defender recently, and Arsenal are keen to enter the race for Jedvaj this summer, with the 17-year-old rated as one of the best prospects in Croatian football.
Jedvaj has been called up to train with the full national squad despite his youth, and could even make his international debut soon. Wenger is aiming to add some depth to his defensive resources this summer, and could move for Jedvaj instead of Ashely Williams, who is apparently valued at around £10million.
Gervinho has admitted he is flattered to be linked with Marseille, adding fuel to the speculation that he will leave Arsenal this summer. The 26-year-old, who is clearly not short of confidence despite his disappointing spell at the Emirates, said that if he was to leave Arsenal, there would be plenty of clubs interested in signing him including Marseille.
Marseille themselves recently expressed an interest in the Ivorian, who joined Arsenal from Ligue 1 side Lille for just under £11million in 2011. Arsenal are hopeful they will be able to reclaim most of that fee by selling Gervinho this summer.
