Arsenal have reportedly made West Ham captain Declan Rice their primary target for the summer transfer window, with Mikel Arteta keen to sign a world-class midfielder.

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, the England international has been identified by the Gunners as their main priority ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with Arsenal being heavily linked with a move for Rice following the closure of the January market.

Having missed out on Brighton & Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo, Arsenal appear to be moving on quickly from the Ecuador international with their interest in Rice, who could be a sensational signing for the Gunners as Arteta looks to add quality depth to his squad for next season.

A complete midfielder who could grow into a better player in north London, Rice ticks a lot of boxes for what the Gunners need in the window and in the current team. And Sheth’s latest comments on Arsenal’s interest in the Premier League star are intriguing, to say the least.

The Sky Sports journalist said what Arsenal’s transfer plans in the summer concerning a central midfielder: “They showed that they wanted to strengthen in that area during January when they went in for Moises Caicedo and went in strongly for him.

Sheth added: “Of course, they didn’t manage to get him, but Declan Rice now appears to be the primary target. The noises we’re hearing is that could be a very realistic one to do for Arsenal in the summer.”

Arsenal’s midfield unit has been one of the best in the Premier League this season, yet ahead of a return to the UEFA Champions League for next year, adding to the position will be key for Arteta’s long-term plans, with Rice a perfect option for the north London club.

The West Ham star has proven to be one of the best in the Premier League in his position, and given how versatile Rice is in playing in midfield, Arteta could be in heaven in coaching the England international to suit Arsenal’s style of play and to fit in at the club.
