Nottingham Forest will reportedly soon announce the signing of Palmeiras wonderkid Danilo having agreed an £18m deal to beat Arsenal to the Brazilian talent.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League strugglers are expected to confirm the capture of the 21-year-old South American after striking an agreement with Palmeiras for Danilo, with the report stating that the midfielder had long been on Arsenal’s radar.

Danilo stands to be not only Forest’s second signing of the window but also the second Brazilian to join the club this January, with the midfielder joining his former Palmeiras teammate Gustavo Scarpa in moving to the City Ground this month.

Regarded by many as one of the best young midfielders in South America, Danilo will feel like a missed opportunity for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta’s side in desperate need of midfield reinforcements to replace the likes of Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.

With Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga two players who could potentially leave in the summer, signing a midfielder this month would make a lot of sense for Arsenal. Which is why Forest signing Danilo will feel like such a blow to the Gunners given how talented the Brazilian is.

Moreover, missing out to a club like Forest, who could realistically go down this season even with the signing of Danilo now just days away, will pack an extra punch to Arsenal, with fans likely expecting better from Edu Gaspar in their pursuit of transfer targets.

There’s no telling how well Danilo will adapt to life in the Premier League with Forest, with the leap from South America to the Premier League one of the most difficult in football and a move very few adapt to within a few months. Yet there’s still that fear that Arsenal might have made a mistake in not signing the midfielder.

As we know, Danilo has been key to Palmeiras in the last three years and was integral in their back-to-back Copa Libertadores victories. And the midfielder landing on his feet in England will be something Arsenal will not want to see after missing out on the youngster.
