Michael Dawson has told Sky Sports News on deadline day that Jorginho joining Arsenal is the signing of the January window after the Gunners raided bitter London rivals Chelsea to sign the Italy maestro for a bargain fee of £12million.

With Conor Gallagher staying put, and Chelsea smashing the British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernandez, Jorginho left. Arsenal have injuries to Thomas Partey and Mo Elneny, and the Gunners have decided to bring in Jorginho.

His contract at Chelsea was due to expire at the end of the season. So, Chelsea have brought in Fernandez and let Jorginho go for a fee – when they were likely to wave goodbye to the Italian on a free at the end of the current season.

Asked for his signing of the window, ex-Tottenham man Dawson picked Jorginho. He feels that with Arsenal picking up injuries in the middle of the park, landing Jorginho was a “no-brainer”. He also feels a fee of £12m is good business.

“Jorginho, £12m, 31, experienced, injuries to the players in midfield to Partey and Elneny, Lokonga going, he is a no-brainer,” Dawson said on Sky Sports News last night, in a video posted on their Instagram on Wednesday morning.

The Gunners have actually spent a lot less than they set out to do. They were in the mix to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk – offering figures in the region of £70m. But he joined Chelsea for £88.5m. Arsenal signed Leandro Trossard instead.

A fee of £27m. Then, they tabled a fee of £70m for Moises Caicedo. They got Jorginho for £12m, from Chelsea. Jakub Kiwior – £20m. Three signings for below £60m – a fee less than what they would have needed for Caicedo or Mudryk.

Stunning business from the Gunners and they exit the window a whole lot stronger than they began the month. Their rivals Manchester City have weakened their side with the loss of Joao Cancelo – while Arsenal have strengthened.
