Manchester City have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal transfer target Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola’s club are also confident about the German.
That is according to 90min, which reports that Manchester City believe Kimmich would slot seamlessly into Guardiola’s plans next season. Talks have also taken place between the two teams about a potential swap deal. It would see Joao Cancelo stay in Bavaria after his loan.
Etihad Stadium chiefs have moved to hold talks with their Allianz Arena counterparts as the Premier League champions admire Kimmich. They also note how the 28-year-old is now set to consider his future at the Bundesliga giants. His contract is only due to run to June 2025.
Arsenal and Man City are interested in Kimmich’s transfer
Earlier in May, 90min also reported that Kimmich is considering his options after becoming unsettled at Bayern Munich. Intermediaries have also reached out to a number of teams to sound out their interest in the 76-cap midfielder. One team they approached was Man City.
His intermediaries have also contacted Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to discuss their interest in Kimmich’s possible transfer from Bayer Munich. Most of the sides approached would be keen if he is available.
Additionally, Marca also reported earlier in May that Arsenal, Barcelona and Liverpool are interested in Kimmich’s transfer from Bayern Munich. But Der FCB will want at least €60m (£52m). A deal would also likely cost more than €20m (£17.5m) a year including his wages.
Guardiola could swap Cancelo for Kimmich this summer
One route Manchester City are exploring to sign Arsenal transfer target Kimmich is to give Bayern Munich the chance to buy Cancelo. The full-back moved to Bavaria on loan with an option to buy worth £61.5m in January. But the Citizens are now open to a potential swap.
Cancelo has become an important player at the Allianz Arena since Thomas Tuchel came in to replace Julian Nagelsmann. He only started in four of a possible seven Bundesliga games with Nagelsmann in charge. But the Portuguese has started seven of Tuchel’s eight fixtures.
Kimmich, who Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus calls ‘the best No6 in the world’, is also instrumental in Bavaria. The midfielder has started 31 of his 32 Bundesliga outings so far this season. He is also their vice-captain and boasts five goals and six assists this term.
