Arsenal are joining the race for Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo as his Bayern Munich loan spell nears its end.

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo is on the radar of Arsenal and Barcelona according to a new report from 90Min.

They claim that Bayern Munich remain keen on Cancelo even if they don’t want to pay the €70million (£61million) permanent clause in his loan deal.

Bayern would want to negotiate a cheaper price but face competition from both Arsenal and Barca.

It’s stated that Mikel Arteta thinks Cancelo would slot perfectly into the Arsenal side.

Arteta worked with Cancelo briefly at City; the Portuguese defender joined City for £60million in 2019, just months before Arteta left for Arsenal.

Cancelo became a star under Pep Guardiola but then seemed to suddenly fall out of the City team after the World Cup.

That resulted in the loan move to Bayern, where Cancelo hasn’t exactly recaptured his best form.

City now have no plans to reintegrate Cancelo into Guardiola’s plans, meaning a summer sale looks likely.

Arsenal are keen, no doubt viewing Cancelo as a player who can make an impact at either right back or left back.

Manchester City would be taking a risk by selling Joao Cancelo to Arsenal

A move to Arsenal would see City sell yet another player to the Gunners.

City sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal last summer and may just regret those decisions now.

Jesus and Zinchenko have been vital players for Arsenal, enabling them to rival City for the Premier League title.

Arsenal have now become a legitimate rival to City and Guardiola’s men need to think long and hard about selling another player to the Gunners.

Cancelo may love a move to Arsenal; he would probably play regularly again and he would reunite with former teammate Jesus, who he called a ‘genius’ just a few months ago.

Bayern and Barcelona will be stern competition but Arsenal could push for another big deal with City this summer with Cancelo’s future unclear.
