Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams has suggested signing Wayne Rooney would be a massive risk for the Gunners, saying that the striker could struggle in London. Adams, who also recently blasted Arsenal for overlooking him for the Chairman role given to Sir Chips Keswick, believes that the England international might not be the right move for the club.
“I don’t think it’s a question of finances. I think it’s his temperament and mentality. London is a different animal and it takes a different type of player,” Adams told The Sun.
“Wayne is unquestionably a super player and I’d love to see him at Arsenal. Technically he’s fantastic but I’m not sure about him mentally, off the pitch, and his professionalism.”
Adams has also questioned whether Arsenal should be interested in signing Gonzalo Higuain, describing the striker as a Real Madrid cast-off. However the Argentine’s father, Jorge, has suggested that Arsenal are at an advanced stage of negotiations with the forward.
Juventus are also still in the running for the player, but there have been reports that Arsenal have essentially agreed a contract with Higuain of around £125,000 a week, although nothing with be formally signed until negotiations over the fee with Real Madrid are concluded. The Spanish club could wait until they have appointed a new manager before the deal is finalised, with Carlo Ancelotti expected to arrive this week after Laurent Blanc was installed as his successor at PSG.
Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has said that there have been no offers for centre-back Ashley Williams, despite speculation that Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool are all considering a move for the player this summer.
Manager Michael Laudrup has indicated that Swansea might lose their captain this summer, with Williams keen to take on a new challenge. Arsene Wenger is reportedly unwilling to meet Swansea’s £10million valuation of the 28-year-old, whilst his former managers Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers have yet to firm up their interest in the player.
