Goal have reported that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal want to sign Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, who was a target of Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

Arsenal are reportedly planning to find cover for Japan international right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu in the summer of 2022.

And the Gunners have identified Spence as a potential target.

The 21-year-old right-back is on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough at the moment.

Spence was strongly linked with a move to Conte’s Tottenham in the January transfer window.

ESPN reported last month that Arsenal’s bitter North London rivals Tottenham made two bids for the right-back turned down.

Djed Spence would make Arsenal better

In our view, Spence would be a very good signing for Arsenal as a back-up to Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu, who cost Arsenal £19.8m in transfer fees (Sky Sports), is the first-choice right-back at the Gunners.

That is not going to change anytime soon.

However, Arsenal do need a right-back as cover, and Spence would be a good signing.

Former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock told TeessideLive back in July 2020 that Spence has “enormous ability” and compared him to Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool and Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka).

It shows just how good the 21-year-old is.
