Tottenham Hotspur have been backed as the best destination for Middlesbrough’s Died Spence, with Stewart Downing not convinced by Arsenal.

Spence was once compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold by Neil Warnock, backing him for a huge future.

Yet come August 2021, Warnock allowed Spence to leave Boro on loan for Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.

That seemed a curious move and Spence has been nothing short of sensational ever since his move.

Spence has bagged two goals and five assists for Forest this season, turning in superb performances whether as a right back or right wing back.

The 21-year-old has been a driving force in Forest’s rise from the bottom of the table to promotion contention.

Spence is unsurprisingly attracting major Premier League interest – and it looks like Arsenal and Tottenham are the favourites.

The Mirror reported earlier in April that Spence is expected to sign for either Arsenal or Tottenham with both teams keen.

Arsenal are in the market for a more expansive right back to complement the defensive ability of Takehiro Tomiyasu in that position.

Spence would fit the bill but Tottenham make just as much sense; arguably more.

Tottenham spent on Emerson Royal last summer but he seems ill-suited to playing as a wing back.

Spence could fit the bill, giving Antonio Conte a more natural option in his 3-4-3 system at Tottenham.

Former Middlesbrough ace Stewart Downing has now offered his view on the situation – and he’s backing Tottenham over Arsenal.

Speaking to The Mirror, Downing has suggested that Tottenham’s style of play suits Spence with Conte expecting his wing backs to get up and down the pitch.

Downing admitted that he is ‘not sure’ Arsenal are right for Spence, but does think Brentford could fit the bill for him.

Downing added that £10million could be a bargain for somebody in the Premier League, with Tottenham no doubt keen at that kind of price.

“I like the way Spurs play with a wing-back system, I know they’re quite defensive but I think Conte likes the wing-backs to go up and down – that suits his (Spence’s) game,” said Downing. “I’m not sure about Arsenal, I think he would have to do another level.”

“For Brentford, the way they play, I think that could suit him. So it wouldn’t surprise me if someone from the Premier League did take a chance on him, because if they get him in for £10 million which is probably not a lot of money in today’s game, you know, I think that could be good business for someone,” he added.
