Paul Merson has said that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal should sign Ivan Toney from Brentford in the summer transfer window, saying that the England international is similar to Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

The former Arsenal star has explained on Sky Sports News (2:44pm, April 29, 2023) why Toney would be a good signing for the Gunners.

The Sky Sports pundit has noted that although the 27-year-old is not at the level of Tottenham and England international striker Kane, he can do a similar job.

Paul Merson wants Arsenal to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford

Merson said about Toney: “I don’t see too much difference between him and Jesus, I don’t, but if I was Arsenal, I would take him. I would take him. He suits Arsenal down to the ground. Sometimes you cannot go long with Jesus, but you can go long with Toney. He is good in the air.”

The pundit added: “He has got a very good brain, Toney. He can see a picture. He is not Harry Kane, but he can do a Harry Kane job where he can come off the centre-halves and he can pass through and he can find a pass and he is tidy.”

HITC Verdict: Summer transfer tricky

In our view, it would be tricky for Arsenal to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford in the summer transfer window.

Now, the Bees will surely not want to sell one of their best players at the end of the season.

And even if they do, Brentford will certainly ask for a lot of transfer fees.

Now, Arsenal are a massive club, but Toney may not be too keen on a switch to the Gunners when he could end up being a back-up to Gabriel Jesus.

Moreover, the Gunners could probably look at someone better and younger than Toney who can extensive experience in the Premier League.

Then there is also the prospect of Toney getting a ban.
