Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson was hoping for a big season on loan at Feyenoord, but he has suffered something of a blow already.

The Gunners winger endured a difficult season last term. With just two Premier League appearances and 70 minutes played, Nelson was barely used.

Mikel Arteta gave him 19 minutes against Brentford on the opening day of the season. That will prove to be Nelson’s last appearance for Arsenal until next summer.

Nelson’s move from Arsenal to Feyenoord

On deadline day last month, Arsenal sent Nelson off to Feyenoord for the season.

Feyenoord had been chasing a deal for Amad Diallo, but when injury scuppered that move, they turned to Nelson.

With Robin van Persie a coach at Feyenoord, Nelson will be looking forward to a big season.

Nelson joins Luis Sinisterra and Alireza Jahanbakhsh in supporting Cyriel Dessers and Bryan Linssen up top, attempting to replace the goals of Steven Berghuis.

Nelson suffers early blow

Feyenoord take on Maccabi Haifa in the Europa Conference League on Tuesday.

They have named their squad for the trip to Israel, but Nelson is notable by his absence.

Voetbal Primeur note that Nelson is ‘not yet match fit’, so has been left back in Rotterdam.

Nelson may have wanted to play in this game to build up match fitness, but he will just have to work back in the Netherlands.

Arsenal not using Nelson much has likely played a part in Feyenoord’s stance, and we may be waiting a few weeks before we see him fit and firing.
