Speaking to Arsenal’s official website on Monday, the 25-year-old said: “When you know that your own fans are behind you, that gives you self-belief and encouragement.

‘I’m generally very satisfied. I think when you assess after the game and see that you have scored and made a goal, you’re relieved and very pleased’.

Ozil speaks of relief, and that shows the pressure he was under. Easily the most talented player in the current Arsenal squad, the 2014 World Cup winner had failed to spark until Saturday, and there were calls to drop him.

Much of his poor form had to do with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger playing him out wide on the left, but when deployed in a central attacking midfield role against Villa Ozil turned on the style.

Wenger was probably experimenting with Ozil on the wing (click here to read more), but that clearly did not work. The way forward for Arsenal is to have the former Real Madrid star play as the ‘Number 10’.
