Everton are interested in Danny Welbeck but Arsenal would be mad to sell.

Everton have turned their attention to another Arsenal forward in their pursuit of recruitment in attack after failing to sign Olivier Giroud.

That man is Danny Welbeck, whom the Mirror say is a fan of Toffees manager Ronald Koeman and who could be tempted by a move to Goodison Park to work under the Dutchman.

Yet if the Gunners’ opening day 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League proved one thing, it is that Welbeck still has a key role to play at the Emirates Stadium.

Not only was the 26-year-old on target for the North London side as they twice came from behind to beat the Foxes, but helped show that his team can be an attacking threat without Alexis Sanchez.

Which could be important, with Sanchez having entered the final year of his current contract with the club and being strongly linked with a move away – most recently by the Telegraph and a £60m switch to Manchester City.

Injuries have disrupted Welbeck’s three years at Arsenal so far since a 2014 transfer from Manchester United, but the attacker has shown glimpses of what he is capable of; not least in last Friday’s goal fest.

Also, after a fifth-placed finish in 2016/17 and the Merseysiders’ busy summer of expensive business, the Gunners would also be selling a player who could well become key for them should stars such as Sanchez leave to a direct top six rival.
