Reported Arsenal target Markus Schubert has snubbed a chance to make the switch to North London but that should be no cause for concern.
Unai Emery is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper to replace Petr Cech who hung up his boots at the end of last season and Schubert was reportedly his preferred choice. However, the German shot-stopper apparently feels that his path to becoming a first-team starter is blocked by compatriot Bernd Leno who has adjusted well to life at the Emirates.
Schubert will certainly have an easier chance to fight for a starting spot at Schalke with Alexander Nubel reportedly attracting interest from German giants Bayern Munich.
Arsenal, however, shouldn’t be too disappointed over the reported snub by Schubert who was never getting anywhere near Leno’s position as the club’s number one. The Gunners should abandon their reported hunt for a new goalkeeper and instead look for one of their own to fill Cech’s shoes next season.
Emiliano Martinez will enter his 10th year as an Arsenal player and the Argentine should finally be given a chance to fight for a place next season. The 26-year-old will return to the Emirates for pre-season after a hugely impressive loan spell with Championship side Reading for whom he turned out to be a real hero.
Martinez has always caught the eye for the Gunners in the few opportunities he has had over the years. His performances in pre-season games have been hugely impressive but he has always remained the third-choice at the club.
Arsenal should and must give their young Argentine a chance to compete with Bernd Leno next season and with a decent amount of game time in cup games, he is sure to become a better player in the near future. Martinez deserves an opportunity to showcase himself at the Emirates and Emery should use his limited budget to bolster other areas of his squad in the summer.
