Arsenal’s interest in Sandro Tonali has been played down and the midfielder is now set to sign a new contract with AC Milan.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of midfielders this summer even after signing Fabio Vieira from Porto.
Youri Tielemans has been the strongest link and Arsenal could yet prise him away from Leicester City before the transfer deadline.
Other rumours seem a little more pie in the sky, and that’s certainly how it seemed when Arsenal were linked with Tonali.
Arsenal’s interest in Sandro Tonali has been played down
Calciomercato in Italy reported earlier this month that Arsenal have shown an interest in signing AC Milan midfielder Tonali.
It was suggested that a deal worth €55million (£46million) may tempt Milan into selling and Arsenal fancied him.
You can certainly imagine that Tonali would make a big impact in this Arsenal midfield but a deal won’t be happening.
Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to report that Tonali has ‘never’ been a real option for Arsenal or other English clubs this summer.
Instead, Tonali is considered ‘untouchable’ at Milan and is actually going to sign a new contract with Milan.
That deal will keep Tonali at the San Siro until 2027, seemingly ruling out a move away any time soon.
With he flowing hair, the Brescia connections and quality on the ball, Tonali just seemed destined to follow in Andrea Pirlo’s footsteps.
That has certainly happened by not only becoming a first-team star at Milan, but also winning a Serie A title with the club.
Tonali, 22, has the potential to become one of the top midfielders in Europe and Milan clearly agree having sorted out that new deal.
Arsenal’s midfield pursuit may still be on, but Tonali can be ruled out as a possible signing before next week’s transfer deadline.
