Arsenal decided to send both William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi off on loan to Marseille – and they are shining back in France.
Guendouzi fell out of favour under Arteta last year, and spent time with Hertha Berlin before heading to Marseille.
Saliba has never really been fancied by Arteta. After a stint with Nice earlier this year, another spell back in France materialised.
Whilst Saliba will head back to Arsenal next summer, Guendouzi is set to stay at Marseille long-term with a permanent deal in place.
Guendouzi and Saliba impressing
Marseille beat Rennes 2-0 on Sunday night, leaving themselves second in the Ligue 2 table.
Jorge Sampaoli is working wonders at Marseille, and both Saliba and Guendouzi are reaping the rewards.
The official Ligue 1 Instagram account announced their team of the week on Tuesday.
Neymar made it in there, and so did both Saliba and Guendouzi as the Arsenal duo were recognised for their performances.
Arteta decisions on Guendouzi and Saliba deserve scrutiny
Once Guendouzi got on Arteta’s bad side, there was no coming back for him at Arsenal.
The 22-year-old undoubtedly has real talent though, and Arsenal have already agreed to sell him for a small fee.
Losing a decent asset for a low price because Arteta isn’t a huge fan deserves critique – especially with Guendouzi shining in France.
Keeping Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka but offloading Guendouzi is a decision that could come back to haunt Arsenal down the line.
As for Saliba, Arsenal persist with defenders like Rob Holding, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari.
Is Saliba really so behind in his development that he can’t force his way ahead of them?
Arsenal also just spent £50million on Ben White, just two years since spending over half of that on Saliba.
This is a third loan spell away for Saliba, and seeing him excel in France has to leave fans questioning Arteta’s wisdom.
