Manchester United reportedly could lose Luke Shaw in 2018.
According to reports from The Mirror, Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in Luke Shaw, as Manchester United have yet to open talks over a new deal.
Shaw, 22, was seen as a huge signing for United during the summer of 2014, as they raided Southampton to land one of English football’s top young talents – but he hasn’t quite lived up to his billing.
The left back has been fighting to prove himself under Jose Mourinho, and whilst many expected his United career to be over, Shaw has bounced back with strong performances of late.
Shaw’s contract ends in 2019, and it’s now claimed that talks over a new deal haven’t started yet, sparking interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.
Tottenham must respond
If United show any suggestion that they will be open to selling Shaw this summer, then one club who should react is Tottenham Hotspur, given lingering questions over Danny Rose’s future.
Shaw worked under Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton, and the United defender even wrote in Guillem Balague’s book ‘Brave New World: Inside Pochettino’s Spurs’ stating that Pochettino called him his son, and he would want to work with the Argentinian again one day.
Heading into January, Shaw’s lack of football meant that Spurs fans had reservations over signing the defender, but his fine recent performances suggest that he does still have the talent that made him so impressive under Pochettino.
If Pochettino truly does rate Shaw as highly as believed, then he may not be keen on seeing him sign for a London rival like Arsenal or Chelsea, and Tottenham must be keeping tabs on the situation as they consider life after Rose.
