Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez looks set to join Aston Villa – and that would leave the Gunners needing a replacement.
Martinez excelled in place of the injured Bernd Leno towards the end of last season, but with Leno now back, the Argentinian wants first-team football elsewhere.
So, where do Arsenal go for a replacement? One interesting rumour emerged on Sunday, with The Telegraph claiming that the Gunners want Dijon stopper Runar Runarsson.
It’s claimed that Arsenal have already held talks with Dijon about a deal, and Runarsson would cost just £1.5million in a bargain swoop.
The rumour seems a little odd, as Runarsson is 25 now, hasn’t played at all this season, only played 11 times last term and has just five caps for Iceland.
Why would Arsenal want him then? Well, the answer may well lie with Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, who worked with Runarsson at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark.
That’s where Runarsson really impressed, earning his move to France, off the back of those displays, and Cana is no doubt driving the interest from Arsenal as they seek a new backup stopper.
Cana even has his own personal YouTube channel showing goalkeeping drills and highlights of the goalkeepers he has been coaching – and sure enough, he has a number of videos of Runarsson in action on his channel.
Cana appears to be a big fan of Runarsson, and with Arsenal no doubt reluctant to spend big money on a second-choice stopper, reuniting the Spaniard with Runarsson does make some sense.
