Nayef Aguerd has posted on Instagram for the first time as a West Ham United player after he joined the club from French side Rennes – prompting reaction from Pablo Fornals, Carlton Cole and Arsenal’s Alex Runarsson.

Aguerd, 26, has finally completed a move to West Ham from Rennes, signing a five-year deal. A fee is said to be a huge £34million for the Morocco international, though West Ham will only play that figure if instalments are met.

Joining from Rennes in 2020, he has since played 80 times. Not only has he been excellent at the back, but he has been a goal threat too – having a hand in 11 goals; scoring seven and creating four more.

Aguerd posted on Instagram, underlining his delight at joining West Ham and arriving in the Premier League. He spoke of his excitement at meeting his teammates and experiencing the atmosphere of the London Stadium.

West Ham needed a centre-back and they have now addressed that. Angelo Ogbonna is 34 and has spent the last 12 months watching from the sidelines through injury. Issa Diop could leave the Hammers this summer.

Carlton Cole took to Instagram to welcome Aguerd to the club – posting “welcome to the family”. Meanwhile, Fornals and Arsenal goalkeeper Runarsson commented on Aguerd’s post – having played with Aguerd at Rennes.
