Arsenal are closing in on signing Jorginho – a player Paul Merson thinks has been ‘very underrated’ during his time in the Premier League.

The Gunners have been chasing a new midfielder over the last week or so with Mohamed Elneny suffering an injury problem.

Moises Caicedo has been a top target for Arsenal but Brighton and Hove Albion are refusing to sell the Ecuador star.

Arsenal have been forced to pivot to another target and have gone down a much cheaper route with Jorginho.

Sky Sports report that Arsenal are close to signing Jorginho a deal worth around £12million.

Sure, the wages for Jorginho will be high but the transfer fee is nothing compared to the deal needed for Caicedo.

Mikel Arteta is understood to be a huge fan of Jorginho and will finally land his man after missing out in 2020.

Paul Merson is a big fan of Arsenal-bound Jorginho

Another big fan of Jorginho appears to be Paul Merson.

The Arsenal legend is never shy when it comes to sharing his opinions and he has previously hailed Jorginho.

Speaking to Sportskeeda earlier this season, Merson suggested that Jorginho is ‘very underrated’ and has been for a while now.

Merson noted that ‘people really don’t understand’ how good Jorginho is in terms of keeping play ticking over in the Premier League.

Merson also suggested that Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice may be highly rated, but they just aren’t like Jorginho in terms of dictating the game.

The Sky Sports pundit appears to be a huge supporter of Jorginho and would surely love to see him in an Arsenal shirt.

That prospect isn’t far away now and Merson will hope to see Jorginho controlling games at the Emirates Stadium very soon.
