Whilst Arsenal fans are desperate to see a new striker arrive at the Emirates Stadium, they may not have thought that Jermain Defoe would be a target.
The Gunners have had an unbeaten start to the season with two wins and three draws, but with just six goals scored in those five games, it’s clear that Arsenal still need to sign a striker – especially with the news that French international Olivier Giroud may be until the start of 2015 with a broken ankle injury.
Bringing in a new striker has been top of every Arsenal fan’s wish list all summer, but so far, they’ve been left disappointed. Alexis Sanchez was signed from Barcelona but has seldom played as a centre forward, whilst Yaya Sanogo has been underwhelming when given the chance to start, leaving the Gunners short up top in Giroud’s absence.
Fans have wanted to see Edinson Cavani, Jackson Martinez and Radamel Falcao arrive at the Emirates Stadium, but it seems that manager Arsene Wenger isn’t keen on splashing out so much money on a striker – and then last week, we saw the bizarre speculation linking Arsenal with a move to sign Nikola Zigic.
Supporters weren’t keen on that, and they may not be much more enamoured with the news that Arsenal have allegedly been offered the chance to sign former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe from Toronto.
The 31-year-old first signed for Spurs back in 2004 from West Ham United, scoring 61 goals in 170 games before heading to Portsmouth in a £6m deal, where his goalscoring exploits continued with 17 goals in just 36 games. Bizarrely, Defoe went back to Spurs in January 2009, scoring another 76 goals in 182 games as he established himself as one of England’s first choice strikers.
However, with Tottenham preferring to use Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, Defoe made the decision to go and play regular first team football in January, signing for MLS side Toronto – and he’s been a sensation in Canada, bagging 12 goals in 17 games.
Despite having signed a four-year deal with the club in January, Defoe is looking to leave the club following the sacking of manager Ryan Nelsen, and it’s believed that Arsenal are contemplating a loan move after Toronto contacted Wenger over the possibility of a deal.
It looks unlikely, but with Arsenal needing experienced firepower in Giroud’s absence, they could do worse than Defoe.
