Arsenal have reportedly joined the likes of Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Montpellier’s Elye Wahi.

According to Jeunes Footeux, the Gunners are closely following the 20-year-old.

As well as Arsenal, Spurs and Borussia Dortmund are also in pursuit of Wahi ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Frenchman has burst onto the scene this season with 12 goals and one assist from 24 Ligue 1 outings.

As per Jeunes Footeux, Wahi is the top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues among players born in or after 2003

He is also the second youngest player to score 25 goals in Ligue 1 (20 years and 76 days), behind Kylian Mbappe (19 years and 28 days).

In terms of price tag, Wahi would reportedly set Arsenal back around €30million, or £26.5million.

‘Exquisite’

Breaking the Lines wrote of the youngster last year: ‘Wahi is a pacey striker who does excel in transitions, but his flexibility and range of finishing make him a lethal threat even for a deep-sitting side.

‘The one-touch finishing is exquisite, and he could be deadly in another counter-attacking side. ‘

Meanwhile, Clermont coach Pascal Gastien recently said of Wahi: “I think he’s one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 at his age.

“What I know is that he’s a very good player. It’s not us who are going to say the opposite, every time time he plays against us, he scores goals!

“He’s an effective player, that’s rare at that age. So yes, I think he will be a very, very good player.”

Our view

All in all, Wahi sounds like a good shout for Arsenal.

He’s extremely talented, has plenty of years ahead of him, and seems relatively inexpensive for such a good prospect.

At the same time, Folarin Balogun has also been shining in Ligue 1 this season, and he’s on the Gunners’ books.

It remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta wants to bring in any more strikers or give Balogun a chance next term.
