Arsenal are reportedly interested in Sevilla’s Grzegorz Krychowiak – a good friend of Wojciech Szczesny.
The recent home capitulation against Anderlecht in the Champions League and the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City in the Premier League have led to Arsenal fans questioning the future of manager Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal are already 11 points behind league leaders Chelsea, and many believe that the Gunners are out of the title race – despite being just over a quarter of the way through the season.
The frustrating thing for Arsenal supporters is that their problems are evident – and they’re the same ones which have plagued the club for years.
One that Wenger may or may not be able to control is that Arsenal seem to get a staggering number of injuries every season, but what he can alter is that the Gunners still don’t have a true defensive midfielder of any notable quality.
Fans have been crying out for a powerful, aggressive holding midfielder to protect the back four, but once again they’ve been subjected to Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta’s futile attempts to anchor the midfield and track runners from deep.
However, speculation suggests that Wenger is lining up a big money January swoop for Sevilla star Grzegorz Krychowiak, who has a release clause of around £24m, according to reports.
He may have only cost Sevilla £3.2m this summer, but his displays in Andalusia have attracted much interest, and it’s largely for showing attributes that Arsenal need – strength, leadership and a never-say-die attitude in front of the Sevilla back four.
Yet Arsenal aren’t the only team interested, as reports this week have touted Inter Milan as a possible suitor for the 24-year-old – but the Gunners may yet have a secret weapon.
Krychowiak is a Polish international, making him a team mate of Wojciech Szczesny, and whilst that may not be a great bargaining chip for Arsenal, it turns out the duo are good friends.
Szczesny – noted as the ‘selfie king’ of the Premier League – is often taking photos alongside Krychowiak during international duty, and the pair are often seen laughing and joking in videos and press conferences.
Szczesny may well be able persuade Krychowiak to choose Arsenal over any other suitors if it came down to it, which would be a huge boost to the Gunners is they do opt to pursue the former Reims man in January.
Krychowiak has all the attributes that Arsenal are looking for in a holding midfielder, and could possess a secret weapon over other clubs in their bid to sign him.
