Arsenal will not compete in the FA Youth Cup final after falling to Chelsea in the semi-finals.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg they welcomed The Blues to the Emirates Stadium – but unfortunately for goalkeeper Josh Vickers it was a day to forget.
He let the ball squirm underneath him and off his heel into the back of the net for a terrible own goal which saw Chelsea book their place in the final against local rivals Fulham with a 3-1 aggregate win.
Arsenal are said to be on the verge of signing Eintracht Frankfurt defender Sebastian Jung. The £7 million rated full-back has long been mooted as a target for The Gunners – who are looking for a new right back to replace the seemingly outgoing Bacary Sagna.
His agent has stated of interest in his services:
“In England we know Arsenal are very strongly on his trail for the summer. They have had scouts watching him in the Bundesliga. There is was interest in the past from Inter, Roma and Milan, but no recent contact.”
From the potential to the ridiculous now – proving that Good Friday always breeds the odd non-story in regards to transfer rumours – as Arsenal are linked with a move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
They are reported to be interested in a £12 million bid for the player – but he is a fixture in United’s long-term plans and this certainly seems to be a non-starter.
Arsene Wenger believes that Mesut Ozil will be player of the year next season after a difficult start to his Premier League career.
Wenger said of the club record signing:
“He is a fantastic football player, and I would put him on the list to be player of the season next season. He had no real preparation this season. But I think he has great physical potential and that will come out. I believe that he will know better his partners, he will know better the league and the potential is absolutely fantastic.”
