Arsenal are looking to open contract talks with manager Arsene Wenger in the next few months.
After smashing their transfer record last week with the signing of Mesut Özil from Real Madrid, The Gunners are now looking to tie down Wenger as manager with his current contract ending in June 2014.
There are reports that majority owner Stan Kroenke and CEO Ivan Gazidis believe that Wenger deserves a new deal after securing the services of Özil, the German said that having the opportunity to work under Wenger was a big reason why he signed for the club.
This news comes as it is reported that the Arsenal manager will have £40m to spend in the January transfer window, the club will look to bring in a world class striker to add to the transfer of Özil.
Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney were reportedly pursued in the summer and it is thought that their situations will be reviewed in the new year. If Arsenal are within touching distance at that point the signing of a striker could push them on to sustaining their challenge.
If Vermaelen does return it will provide some much needed defensive depth to the Arsenal squad after Wenger decided against adding a defender in the transfer window.
