Liverpool lost one of their most important players this summer as Sadio Mane headed to Bayern Munich after the Reds lost their Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Mane departed in the summer, and Liverpool were then scrambling to replace one of their best players.
Eventually, they didn’t go for a like-for-like replacement, signing Darwin Nunez as their only new attacker this summer, but they very nearly went for a player who is much more in the mould of Mane.
Indeed, according to Alasdair Gold on his YouTube channel this week, Liverpool were considering a move for Heung-Min Son if Tottenham hadn’t finished in the top four last season.
“I’ve seen there have been a lot of links with Sonny over the past few days here, there and everywhere. I said it a while ago that Liverpool were considering Son if Spurs hadn’t gotten into the Champions League under Conte. Liverpool were considering potentially last summer going for Sonny,” Gold said.

Of course, Tottenham did get into the top four last season, and while that was largely down to their own good form, they also have Arsenal to thank for their Champions League status this season.
The Gunners seemed to have a stranglehold on the fourth-place spot last season, but a late collapse opened the door for Spurs.
Arsenal’s losses to both Tottenham and Newcastle last season gifted Spurs the chance to get into the top four, and, in turn, that led to Liverpool never amping up their interest in Son.
The South Korean could’ve been the perfect Mane replacement, he’s quick, he’s a great finisher, he’s proven in the Premier League and he knows where the back of the net is.
Sadly for Liverpool, Son didn’t head to Anfield, and that’s partly down to Arsenal’s poor form at the end of last season.
