Matt Macey has been spotted training with Arsenal’s first-team as ‘Project Re-start’ inches ever closer, with Football London providing evidence of the seldom-seen goalkeeper’s existence at London Colney.
Three years ago, after a 0-0 Europa League draw between the Gunners and Red Star Belgrade at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger hailed the impact of a young shot-stopper who was making only his second appearance in Arsenal colours.
“I think he took his chance very well,” the legendary manager told the Independent.
“He is huge, he is quick, and you don’t often find that combination, of that size and that speed. He is very agile.”
Macey would have hoped, after an eye-catching performance which earned him plenty of plaudits and a hard-earned clean sheet, that his Arsenal career was only just beginning.
Flash forward to the summer of 2020, however, and the now-25-year-old is still awaiting his third game for the north London giants.
In truth, it might never arrive with Bernd Leno and Emi Martinez firmly established as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeping options.
Nonetheless, Macey will not have given up hope of forcing his way into Arteta’s plans.
The former Plymouth Argyle loanee has been in action since Arsenal’s return to full-contact training, aiming to show off his impressive reflexes against the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and co.
With another 12 months on his contract at Arsenal, it remains to be seen whether Macey will stick around in the hope of a chance which might never arrive. There are certainly plenty of Football League clubs who would benefit from a goalkeeper of his ability.
