Auston Trusty is a centre-half, but you wouldn’t think it looking at his recent scoring record.
Indeed, the Arsenal loanee has now scored three goals in his last five games over at Birmingham City, and he netted again on Friday evening with a remarkable effort.
With a goal that we could only describe as a backheel volley, Trusty scored a fantastic looping goal from a set-piece to take his tally to three for the season.
Trusty is quickly becoming a fan favourite at St Andrew’s, and Mikel Arteta should have a keen eye on his development.
Trusty probably isn’t going to be the next William Saliba and become an Arsenal star after going out on loan, but he could well have a role to play at Arsenal next year.
The Gunners are keen to get defensive reinforcements through the door in order to give themselves a bit more depth at centre-half, but with Trusty on the books, perhaps that isn’t necessary.
At the age of 24, Trusty’s ceiling probably isn’t all that much higher than where he currently is, but the fact that he’s shining in the Championship may indicate that he’s got a Premier League future ahead of him.
He probably won’t become a starter for Arsenal at this point in his career. After all, he’s never played a single minute of top-flight European football, but he certainly appears to be good enough to play a rotational role for this Arsenal team a la Rob Holding.
The American is certainly a player to keep an eye on, and as long as he keeps scoring he’ll likely continue making headlines with the Blues.
