Sporting striker Tiago Tomas has been heavily linked with Arsenal this year, and he has now commented on his future in Portugal.

The Sun reported back in February that Arsenal were closing in on a £20million deal to sign Tomas in this summer’s transfer window.

Edu was allegedly in contact to set up the deal for much less than the £52million release clause in the striker’s contract.

Edu and Mikel Arteta were allegedly enamoured with Tomas after scouting Sporting v Benfica, and it all looked to be pointing towards Tomas arriving in North London.

It’s now nearly August and Tomas is still a Sporting player. In truth, the Arsenal links have died down a lot of late.

The Portuguese press haven’t forgotten though, and O Jogo claim that Arsenal and Roma have both shown an interest in signing the striker.

They state that Tomas has a ‘self-confessed fan of Thierry Henry’ from his boyhood days, meaning a move to Arsenal would surely appeal.

Tomas has played down any talk of a move though, claiming that he is concentrating on Sporting and doesn’t want to leave.

“I’ve always been focused on Sporting. This is where I want to stay,” Tomas told O Jogo.

Tomas, 19, has scored six times in 42 games for Sporting and helped them win the league title last season, with a big future predicted for him.

A move to Arsenal this summer seems a little unlikely now, but keep an eye on him for the future – especially given his love for Henry.
