Pundit Jamie Carragher has named Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale as his signing of the season having been surprised with his performances.

Arsenal raised a few eyebrows back in August when they desperately pursued the signature of Ramsdale.

Some thought Edu had, with all due respect, lost his mind.

Ramsdale had suffered successive relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, not exactly covering himself in glory.

Yet in the mind of Edu and Arteta, Ramsdale was the man for Arsenal. They sanctioned a deal that could reach £30million – something many found baffling.

Right now though, Arsenal have got it right. Ramsdale has been a sensation in goal, quickly displacing Bernd Leno in the Arsenal side.

Ramsdale now has nine clean sheets in 16 league games for Arsenal, whilst he has struck up a great connection with Arsenal fans who didn’t completely warm to Leno.

The money looks well-spent, and Carragher has now offered his praise to Ramsdale.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday night, Carragher picked out Ramsdale as his signing of the season so far.

Carragher noted that Ramsdale is actually showing presence and personality that he wasn’t sure he had, praising him for a huge impact at Arsenal having proven him wrong.

“I went for Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise to me,” said Carragher. “When they brought him in, I thought they were bringing him in as backup, and almost bringing him in because he was an English player, for the quota. He hadn’t impressed me in his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth.

“It’s not just the saves he’s made, he’s a personality, he’s a character. I just think he’s got a presence about him that I didn’t see that he had, and I think he’s had a big impact on the team,” he added.
